"Charlotte." Will said, running his hand over his face in exasperation. "Please, just tell me where James is. Please."

Charlotte shook her head. “Will, I can’t. I’m sorry, but it’s not fair to Jem—”

"It’s not fair to me! He is my parabatai. My brother. For you to keep this…

And after almost a solid hour of nagging, Tessa found herself in a carriage with Will and Charlotte, on their way to the Silent City.

She had no idea how Will had done it, or why Charlotte had given in, but a very large part of herself was glad that they would see Jem.

When the carriage got there, Charlotte had a very short conversation with one of the Silent Brothers, while Will and Tessa waited in the carriage. “Do you think he’s alright?” Tessa asked.

Will hesitated for a moment. “I think, that James will be alright. Eventually.” He said slowly, before taking her hand and helping her out of the carriage, leading her into the Silent City.

"It’s not fair to me! He is my parabatai. My brother. For you to keep this from me is horrible and awful!"

Charlotte closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “Fine. He’s in the Silent City. The Brothers had to examine him. Are you happy?”

Tessa saw the look in Charlotte’s eyes, and she knew that the woman knew exactly what had happened.

Maybe she knew where Jem was.

No. She shoved the thought away to the back of her mind. Jem didn’t want then there. Jem was gone.

Jem was back in his room in the Silent…

Tessa had sought refuge in the library, finding comfort in the books she had thought abnormal and strange when she first arrived.

It was amazing, how much could happen in such a short amount of time. She’d lost all the family she had left, fallen in love, and even learned who her true parents were.

This was far from what she’d expected her life to be, when she came here in search of her brother.

But in this moment, she could only think of Jem, and how horrible she must be.

Will pushed his plate away with a little too much force, sending scrambled eggs flying as he got to his feet and left the room.

He was definitely taking this harder than Tessa had thought he would.

James.

Jem’s head snapped up as Brother Enoch’s voice pierced his mind.

The dining room was eerily quiet that morning, Tessa noticed.

Will had barely said a word, save for when he had asked for the biscuits.

Tessa herself didn’t feel much like talking. She didn’t feel well enough to eat much, either.

Tessa felt hot tears sting her eyes, and she wanted nothing more than for them to go away. She hated to cry.

Will had barely said a word, save for when he had asked for the biscuits.

Tessa herself didn’t feel much like talking. She didn’t feel well enough to eat much, either.

Henry, as always, was oblivious to the uncomfortable silence, and was rambling on about the adjustments he had made to his wheelchair.

At least some things would never change.

Tessa knew when she woke up that she hadn’t been asleep for very long. And she hadn’t been.

The sun was still high in the sky, warm, golden light streaming through the windows.

Tessa felt hot tears sting her eyes, and she wanted nothing more than for them to go away. She hated to cry.

Her mind started to spin at the thought of having to choose between Jem and Will, but then she realized she wouldn’t be able to.

Jem wouldn’t marry her if he knew Will was in love with her, and vice versa. There would be no happy endings. The two people she loved most were mortal, and would only live one lifetime. How could she bear to spend it with neither of them?

She must’ve reread the letter ten times before she put it back on her nightstand. Gathering what little strength she had, she stood up and walked out of the infirmary in search of Will.

As much as she hated it, Jem was right. He was almost always right. She would have to stay with Will. They would need each other in a time like this.

18tessagray62:

Will took a deep breath and folded the letter, slipping it into his pocket before he took Tessa’s letter, and walked back to the infirmary.

Jem was gone. Jem had said for Will not to blame himself, but that’s exactly what he did. He had forced his brother away from his home.

The sun was still high in the sky, warm, golden light streaming through the windows.

She almost laughed at the unfairness of it all. How the world could be so bright and happy when she felt so horrid.

Her eyes caught sight of a piece of paper by her bedside, and immediately recognized the looping script Jem so often used in his writing.

She drew in a trembling breath before she picked up the letter and began to read.

Will knocked on Jem’s door.

"James? James open up." He said, pausing for a minute to wait for a response. When none came, he opened the door and walked into the room.

Empty.

What kind of a brother was he?

He walked into the infirmary, and set Tessa’s letter on the nightstand next to her bed. She’d fallen asleep shortly after Jem had left, and Will knew she needed the rest.

18tessagray62:

Will decided to leave Tessa alone for a while, so he left the infirmary and set off to find Jem.

They still needed to talk about this, as much as it would hurt them. Will would let Jem marry Tessa, even if it meant he wouldn’t get to be with her.

It was worth it, if his…
